Help with decorating and gardening for council tenants

Decorating and gardening schemes for council tenants over 70 years old or with a disability

The amount of money available each year for these schemes is limited. We will close applications to the schemes once we reach the maximum amount.

Please read the scheme details carefully before applying. To be eligible for these schemes, you must be

  • a secure tenant of Brighton & Hove City Council

And one of the following must apply

  • age 70 or over
  • or receiving either Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Housing Benefit.

If you do not qualify for the schemes, you can locate gardeners, decorators and other trades at Buy With Confidence. Age UK also offer a gardening scheme at Help At Home.

Decorating scheme

We're now accepting applications for the decorating scheme for the new financial year (April 2018 to March 2019).

  • Successful applications to either option of the discretionary decorating scheme will only be considered once every two years.
  • Tenants who are behind with their rent or have legal notices against their tenancy will not normally be considered.

The decorating scheme is made up of two options. If you are eligible you can apply for the one most appropriate to you.

Option 1 - Decorating packs

This scheme is for tenants who are able to do the work themselves or have a friend or family member who can do it for them. A decorating pack will be issued containing the materials they will need to decorate one room in their home.

Apply for a decorating pack (2018-2019 financial year)

Option 2 - Decorating work carried out by Mears

This scheme is for tenants who are unable to do the decorating work themselves and do not have anyone available to help them. The work will be carried out by Mears decorators.

Gardening scheme

Successful applicants will benefit from grass and hedge cuts throughout the year from April.

We are now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 gardening scheme. Please note that if you are on the April 2017- March 2018 gardening scheme, you do not need to reapply for the April 2018 - March 2019 gardening scheme, as we will automatically enrol you. However, you will need to contact us if there are any changes in your circumstances, such as an adult occupant moving into your property or your garden has changed.

  • This scheme is for tenants who are unable to cut their grass or trim their hedges and do not have anyone available to help them.
  • Adult occupants must receive DLA, PIP or Attendance Allowance to be classed as being unable to help.
  • Tenants who are behind with their rent or have legal notices against their tenancy will not normally be considered.
  • We can only accept customers with manageable gardens; we are not able to accept customers with very overgrown gardens that require a garden clearance. Please call us on 01273 293030 if you need advice on clearing your garden.

Apply for the gardening scheme (2018-2019 financial year)
Please do not reapply if you were accepted onto the April 2017 - March 2018 gardening scheme, as you will already be enrolled.

Gardening scheme routes

The gardeners started cutting gardens from 2 April 2018 and are currently on the second round of cuts (grass and hedges), on routes 4 and 9. Routes 6 and 11 will be next. Please see the garden route list to see which garden route number you are on.

It takes approximately two months to complete one round of cuts (dependent on the weather conditions).

As gardening work is weather dependent, we will not be able to make set appointments. Customers on the scheme must ensure that all animal faeces and rubbish of any kind is cleared from your garden at all times. Failure to do so may result in you being removed from the scheme.
