Rain water gullies

There are over 18,000 gullies and soakaways across Brighton & Hove. Rain water gullies are the grates and drains in the road which take rain off our streets and divert it into either the sewer system or soakaways.

We arrange the cleaning of gullies on the city's public roads through a private contractor called FM Conway Limited. They ensure that each gully is cleaned either annually or every 18 months, depending on the location. When a gully has been cleaned, the grating has a coloured spot spray painted on it to indicate that it has been done.

Ninety-five per cent of the materials collected from the bottom of these gullies is recycled by the contractor, mostly being made into materials for road surfacing.
