Household Waste Recycling Sites
We have two recycling sites (known as tips) in Brighton & Hove for use by residents. These are managed by Veolia Environmental Services in partnership with the council.
You can recycle over 30 materials at the recycling sites which are sent for reuse, recycling or safe disposal.
If you cannot get to the either of sites, you can organise a bulky waste collection.
We don't accept business, commercial or trade waste at our recycling sites. Find out more about business recycling and waste.
Hove recycling site
The Hove recycling site is the larger of our two sites and includes a YMCA store which sells second hand items in good condition for charity.
- Monday to Friday: 8am to 4.30pm
- Saturday: 8.30am to 1.30pm
- Sunday: 10.30am to 1.30pm
- Bank holidays: closed
Off Old Shoreham Road, Hove, BN3 7AE, between Aldrington Avenue and Leighton Road.
You can take bus numbers 2B, 5, 5A, 56 and 59 to and from Aldrington Avenue, which is by the Hove recycling site. Please check with the bus company before travelling with any large or flammable items.
Brighton recycling site
You can recycle over 20 materials here. Due to the size of the centre vans must park by the barrier and use trolleys to wheel in waste. This site is not able to handle trucks and trailers. Please see our vehicle access information below for more details.
Please also be aware that we are upgrading and improving the site so there may be slightly longer queues or delays.
- Monday to Friday: 8am to 4.30pm
- Saturday and Sunday: 9am to 5pm
- Bank holidays: 9am to 5pm
Off Wilson Avenue, Brighton, BN2 5PA, about half way up Wilson Avenue, on the eastern side.
You can take bus numbers 21, 72 and 84 to and from Vines Cross Road, which is by the Brighton recycling site. Please check with the bus company before travelling with any large or flammable items.
You must bring two forms of identification, these include:
- your council bill or a utility bill to prove that you are a Brighton & Hove resident
- photo identification, such as a driver’s licence or passport
- if you are using a hire van then we also require the rental agreement
If you are bringing waste to the sites for someone else as a personal favour, that person has to come with you and also bring the above identification.
If you have hired a removals van or a similar service you cannot use these sites. You will need to deal with your waste privately.
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will not be allowed onsite at either site.
There is a height restriction of 6 feet 1 inch.
No trailers will be accepted at the Brighton site, and Hove will only accept single axis trailers up to 4 feet long.
East Sussex County Council and Veolia Environmental Services have provided this helpful info sheet which shows what vehicles are allowed on site.
The staff at the sites may refuse entry if:
- you fail to produce two forms of identification
- you bring renovation or demolition waste that is over the monthly limits permitted at the sites
- they believe that your waste is from a non domestic source
If you have any questions then please contact the rubbish and recycling team.
The recycling sites are only for household waste from city residents. Business waste will not be accepted.
Business waste is any waste from commercial, trade or business activities. This includes any waste from domestic properties used for profit (for example landlords taking waste from a rented property) and waste that is being removed for payment.
Staff reserve the right to inspect any waste entering the recycling sites. If they suspect the waste is business waste you may be turned away.
