Council Tax - uninhabitable properties

Uninhabitable properties

If your property is having major repair work or structural alterations, you now have to pay full Council Tax.

However, properties condemned as 'unfit for human habitation' by our Environmental Health service are exempt from Council Tax - see our occupation prohibited discount.

Alternatively, you can contact the Valuation Office Agency (telephone 03000 501501 for properties in Brighton & Hove) to make a proposal to remove the property from Council Tax listing. If removed, you will not have to pay Council Tax until it is reinstated in the Valuation List.

Discretionary four week discount

A discretionary discount for empty properties is available in exceptional circumstances.

Each case will be looked at on an individual basis, but the following situations do not qualify for the discount:

  • renovation
  • plumbing or heating
  • replacement/repairs of bathroom and kitchen or any other fittings/fixtures
  • major repairs to roof structures
  • rebuilding external walls
  • repair/renewal of foundations
  • replacing defective solid floors, floor or ceiling joists

If you think that your circumstances are exceptional, please complete the form Discretionary Council Tax discount for empty and unfurnished properties [MS Word 14KB] and email it to: revenues.inspectors@brighton-hove.gov.uk or send it to: Council Tax, Brighton & Hove City Council, P.O.
