The Cherish service provides social and leisure opportunities for young people aged 16 to 25 with moderate to severe learning disabilities. Cherish is all about taking time to enjoy fun for the sake of fun, providing opportunities to socialise and encouraging interaction, all while building life skills.
Cherish offers two types of activity: evening term-time groups and minibus-based day trips during the Easter and Sugust school holiday periods.
Referrals to the Cherish service are welcomed from social workers or parent/carers as well as from young people themselves.
Both a youth club and young adults group meets 30 times a year during school term-times. There is a high staff to service-user ratio for these activities and each session costs £12 if a service-user has a social care individualised Direct Payment personal budget or £10.50 for service-users without an individualised Direct Payment personal budget. The groups meet in Wellington House, Wellington Road which is off Elm Grove.
All places for the evening activities must be applied for and confirmed by Cherish in advance (see below for details of how to contact the service). A waiting list operates if no spaces are available.
A series of minibus-based day trips are offered through the Easter and August school holiday periods, all with a 1:1 staff to service-user ratio. Examples of trips include visiting an art gallery in Eastbourne, fruit picking on a farm and visiting the funfair in Littlehampton. Each trip costs £45 if a service-user has a social care individualised Direct Payment personal budget or £29 for service-users without an individualised Direct Payment personal budget. All trips must be booked and confirmed by Cherish in advance.
There are two booking periods for the holiday day-trips, from the end of February for the Easter scheme and from the end of June for the August scheme. A form needs to be completed as part of the booking which details the young person or young adult's needs. Please contact the service for a booking form.
