Family Learning

In schools

Our expert team work in schools to help achieve the best outcomes for children and parents in Brighton & Hove. We have worked in a number of schools including Fairlight Primary, Rudyard Kipling Primary and Moulsecoomb Primary and we are keen to work with more.

Family Literacy or Family Numeracy is typically a six week course designed to boost children’s early literacy/numeracy skills. Our tutors work with children in a small, supportive group to enhance early literacy/numeracy. There is always close liaison between the children’s teachers to ensure Family Learning supports the work in the classroom.

At the same time, the adult tutor works supportively with the children’s parent/carer to reinforce the importance of adult involvement and home learning. This is all offered in an accessible way, allowing plenty of time for discussion. Parents are given practical resources and support to try activities at home.

A parent on one of our courses gave this feedback:

To say these 6 weekly sessions have changed our life is an understatement. Now I can teach my son how he is taught at school. It’s changed things, he now is recognising and retaining letters. I think every parent should do the course. It’s given me confidence. We loved every session and have since made ginger bread men again. The course is a life changing skill that each parent should learn. I wanted to take the time to thank you because you got his attention and got him learning which is amazing.

A head teacher had this to say about our Family Learning courses:

Rudyard Kipling Primary School has benefitted in so many ways from the outstanding support, provision and programmes that the Family Learning Team deliver to our parents, carers and children. Families enjoy these sessions and reach out and embrace the ideas and strategies that they are given, to enable them to develop their own parenting skills. Thank you. We love you being in our school and a part of our community!
