Becoming a taxi driver

How can I become a Brighton & Hove licensed taxi driver?

We recommended that you enrol at one the commercial knowledge schools and begin learning the Brighton & Hove knowledge. Once you are a large portion of the way through the course, you will need to complete an application form, undergo a medical examination, Police, and DVLA checks.

You will also need to achieve the Level 2 BTEC Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver Award. You can arrange this by contacting various training companies or colleges.

When you are ready to make your first application, you will need to complete the relevant application forms.

You will also be required to pass the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Assessment. Information regarding fees and the telephone booking number can be found in the latest DSA information pack, available here: DSA Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Assessment Booklet (PDF 477kb).

Once you're deemed to be a fit and proper person, and passed the Brighton & Hove knowledge tests and routes test, you can receive a taxi driver licence. Download the Blue handbook (PDF 1.08MB), which provides guidance for Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Drivers, Vehicles and Operators.
