Who can apply for a business grant or support payment?

Any Brighton & Hove business that has been severely affected by the national Covid-19 restrictions from 1 November.

This includes:

  • The lockdown period from 5 November to 1 December
  • Tier 2 restrictions from 2 to 25 December
  • The Christmas support payment
  • Tier 4 restrictions from 26 December
  • The lockdown period from 5 January 2021

Some grants only apply to businesses that pay rates directly to the council. We are also trying to support businesses that do not have premises or pay rates to a landlord but have been severely impacted by the restrictions. We are doing this through a discretionary fund called the Additional Restrictions Grant.

If in doubt about whether you qualify, please apply and we will assess your claim.

You only need to make one application for the above payments.

Some businesses will also be entitled to an additional one-off payment following the announcement of the lockdown on 5 January. More details about the Closed Business Lockdown Payment and the other grants are on our businesses and employers web page and applicants guide.

How do I apply for a payment?

Please use our secure MyAccount online form to apply.

Read the guidance before you start to complete the form. It includes which documents you need to complete the form.

You may qualify for more than one grant, but you only need to make one application.

More information about how to apply can be found on our businesses and employers web page.

Where can I find support on completing the application form?

We have produced a detailed how to apply guide to help you complete the online form. This includes information about how to contact us if you have problems using the online form or registration process.

If approved, when will I receive payment?

We hope to clear all outstanding payments by the end of March 2021.

Businesses will receive e-mails explaining the awards.

There have been a number of changes to government guidance since the grants fund was launched. With each change we have reviewed rejected applications again and through this process have been able to move some applications to a grant award.

This process has delayed notification to businesses which have been unsuccessful in claiming a grant. We apologise for the delay this has caused but it has enabled us to check applications and pick up on businesses that became eligible for a grant following the government’s changes.

We fully appreciate how important these grants are to local businesses and are working hard to process claims as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding while we assess and process these payments.

I have applied for an Additional Restrictions Grant (discretionary grant) for the period 5 November to 2 December but have not yet received a grant.

Applications for the Additional Restrictions grant are still being reviewed and payments to eligible businesses are ongoing.

Due to the volume of applications it is taking time to determine the applications. However, payments will continue to be made to all eligible businesses.

If you have not yet heard from us, then we will be in contact within the next few weeks to advise you of the outcome.

I have not yet applied for an Additional Restrictions Grant (discretionary grant) for the period 5 November to 2 December, can I still apply?

Yes, you can still apply for this fund. If you have not yet applied, then you are encouraged to do so now.

If I am already receiving regular payments for the tier 2 restrictions, do I have to re-apply separately for further payments under tier 4?

No, you only need to make one application for these payments.

Do I need to apply separately to get a payment under the current lockdown period (from 5 January 2021)?

No, payments in tier 4 will continue for the lockdown period.

We intend to make payments every 4 weeks.

More details about grants available during lockdown are on the businesses and employers web page when they are available.

If I have not yet applied for payments for the November lockdown, tier 2 or tier 4 schemes, can I still apply?

Yes, please read the guide on how to apply and complete the online form. You only need to make one application.

What is the closing date for applications?

There is a closing date of 31 March for all Local Restriction Support (LRSG) and Tier grants for periods up to 15 February.

There is a closing date of 31 May for LRSG and Tier grants for the period covering 16 February to 31 March.

There is a closing date of 31 March for the additional restrictions grant for taxi drivers and childcare providers.

We also anticipate that there will be a closing date for the other additional restrictions grants as funds are limited.

More details about these grants can be found on the businesses and employers web page.

What discretionary grants are available and how do I apply?

Businesses that don’t have a business premises or who pay business rates to a landlord can apply for the Additional Restrictions Grant.

The city has received additional discretionary funds to supplement the Additional Restriction Grant fund for the lockdown period that started on 5 January.

We will be providing targeted support payments for taxi drivers and childcare providers. These are now open for application. More details are on the businesses and employers web page.
