About sexual exploitation
The Department for Education defines child sexual exploitation as:
“a form of child sexual abuse".
Sexual exploitation happens when an individual or group takes advantage of a child or young person under the age of 18 to coerce, manipulate or deceive them into sexual activity.
A person can exploit a child or young person by:
- demanding sexual activity in exchange for something the victim needs or wants
- having a financial advantage or increased status over the victim
The victim may have been sexually exploited even if the sexual activity appears consensual.
Child sexual exploitation does not always involve physical contact. It can also happen through the use of technology.
Children and young people are often sexually exploited by people they know. This could be a partner or someone they think of as a peer. Most sexual exploitation is hidden from public view.
Sexual exploitation of adults can be linked to serious organised crime, modern slavery and human trafficking.
