Madeira Terrace is a Grade 2* listed, 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton.
The Terrace was originally built in the late 1800s, with cast iron and concrete being new materials for building at the time. The local marine environment and successive reduction in funds for maintenance resulted in the structure deteriorating. Between 2015 and 2016, Madeira Terrace closed to public access as the structure was unsafe.
Due to the funding available for this project and the size of the restoration works we need to do, we’ll be restoring Madeira Terrace in phases. Work on Phase One, the first 28 arches and a new lift to improve access to the eastern seafront, began in November 2024. It is anticipated the first restored section will open in 2026.
With activity now started on site we want to ensure local residents and businesses are kept in the picture on the progress of work and how it could affect them. We'll be working closely with Mackley to try to provide the best possible communications.
Go to our engagement and consultation page for details of our progress updates.
The Madeira Terrace restoration is one of the projects at the centre of the new Seafront Development Board's work. If you would like to volunteer to join the Board, visit our volunteering opportunities page.
