Transforming the way we travel
We're defining travel and transport as anything we do to move around Brighton & Hove. Whether that's the mode of transport we use or the transport network across the city.
We know as a city, a large proportion of carbon emissions are produced through transport. If Brighton & Hove has any chance of becoming carbon neutral, we have to change the way we travel.
That’s why we used our first ever climate assembly in 2020 to focus on transport and to explore possible changes we could put in place.
Since then, we've been looking into how we can best put these suggestions into practice and how they can fit into wider transport plans.
The top 5 actions for travel and transport are to:
- develop Local Transport Plan 5 to set priorities for transport and travel in the city to 2030 supporting the reduction of carbon emissions, improved air quality and providing safe, inclusive, sustainable and healthy alternative travel options
- develop options for projects including liveable city centre, an expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone, low traffic neighbourhoods and mobility hubs, in line with climate assembly recommendations
- deliver School Streets programme to improve road safety and air quality outside schools
- install hundreds of on-street electric charging points and rapid charging hubs for taxis
- reduce carbon emissions from council-owned vehicles
We're starting a once-in-a-generation transformational programme of works to radically reduce the transport-related carbon emissions in the city.
We're trialing new projects for Brighton & Hove which aim to provide safe, inclusive, sustainable and healthy travel options while reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.
As a large proportion of carbon emissions in the city come from travel and transport, it is essential that we adapt the way we move around the city to have any chance of becoming a carbon neutral Brighton & Hove.
Bikeshare
BTN Bikeshare allows residents, visitors and those who work in the city to travel around Brighton & Hove while keeping a low carbon footprint.
BTN Bikeshare was created with funding support from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership. It's operated by Hourbike Ltd and allows residents, commuters and visitors to rent a bike for short journeys across the city.
With points across Brighton & Hove to pick up and drop off the bikes, this is a great alternative to purchasing your own bike or if you want transport flexibility.
What you can do
One of the quickest ways to reduce your personal carbon emissions is to not drive a car.
If your journey is a short one, try to get there by public transport or by active travel. It's good for the environment and great exercise.
And with our BetterPoints app, that gives you points for active travel, you get rewarded for it.
