City by-elections - May 2021

By-elections were held in the Hollingdean & Stanmer ward and the Patcham ward on Thursday 6 May 2021.

Following the resignation of Tracey Hill in Hollingdean & Stanmer and Lee Wares in Patcham, by-elections took place on Thursday 6 May 2021.

If you are a resident in one of those wards you could cast your vote for a councillor to represent you as part of Brighton & Hove City Council.

Hollingdean & Stanmer results

Zoë Olivia John has been elected as councillor for the Hollingdean & Stanmer ward following a by-election on Thursday 6 May 2021.

The by-election was called following the resignation of Tracey Hill to fill the vacancy of councillor in the Hollingdean & Stanmer ward of Brighton & Hove City Council.

Leila Erin-Jenkins (Labour Party) 1,262 votes
Nigel Furness (Independent) 24 votes
Alex Hargreaves (Liberal Democrats) 47 votes
Zoë Olivia John (Green Party) 1,542 votes
Des Jones (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) 35 votes
Rob Somerton-Jones (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) 54 votes

The turnout was 31.9% (out of an electorate of 11,758).

Patcham results

Anne Christine Meadows has been elected as councillor for the Patcham ward following a by-election on Thursday 6 May 2021.

The by-election was called following the resignation of Lee Wares to fill the vacancy of councillor in the Patcham ward of Brighton & Hove City Council.

Charles Daniel Goodhand (UK Independence Party (UKIP)) 50 votes
Madelaine Joanna Primrose Hunter-Taylor (Liberal Democrats) 174 votes
Anne Christine Meadows (The Conservative Party) 2,011 votes
Eliza Wyatt (Green Party) 1,733 votes

The turnout was 43.8% (out of an electorate of 11,106).

Who could vote

To vote in a local by-election you must:

  • be registered to vote at an address within the ward
  • be 18 years old or over on 6 May 2021
  • not be legally excluded from voting
  • be a British, Irish, EU or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen

COVID-19 safe-measures at the May 2021 elections

We put the following measures in place to allow you to vote safely at polling stations:

  • staff and voters were required to wear face coverings where they were able to
  • there were hand-sanitising stations on the way in and out of polling stations
  • regular cleaning of polling booths and pencils
  • social distancing of at least 2 metres
  • queues outside to minimise interactions and keep you safe
  • confirming the number of electors that can be safely allowed in each polling station at any time - once at capacity a one in, one out policy will be in place

  • Tuesday 30 March to Thursday 8 April at 4pm, between 10am and 4pm on working days – delivery of nomination papers
  • Monday 19 April at 11.59pm - last day to register to vote
  • Tuesday 20 April at 5pm - last day for us to receive your postal vote application or to make changes to existing postal or proxy votes
  • Tuesday 27 April at 5pm - last day for us to receive your proxy vote application
  • Thursday 6 May, 7am to 10pm - polling day
  • Friday 7 May - counting of votes and results
