Brighton & Hove Libraries are celebrating Black History Month and Libraries Week.

We would love you to join us!

Black History Month 2021

Inspired by Black Lives Matter, Black History Month UK are launching a new campaign for Black History month 2021 called Proud To Be. The campaign will encourage Black and Brown people including celebrities to share what they're proud to be. This is part of a month-long celebration of the incredible richness and diversity of Black and Brown heritage in the UK.

If you have a story to share for Black History Month 2021 please share via letter, email or social media, including video and audio clips. To find out more and to be involved email editor@blackhistorymonth.org.uk 

We've specially curated stock throughout the month of October for Black History Month so:

As well as Black History Month it’s Libraries Week from 4 to 10 October. We’re very pleased to be offering special events, exhibitions, and activities for all ages, both in person and online to celebrate Black History Month and Libraries Week. We’re reintroducing some of our regular in library activities too. Take a look at how we are celebrating!

The Business and IP Centre (BIPC)

A number of the events listed below are organised by the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) Brighton & Hove, based in the Jubilee Library in central Brighton.

The BIPC supports entrepreneurs, inventors, and small businesses across Sussex, from that first spark of inspiration to successfully launching and developing a business. 

The BIPC Brighton & Hove is part of the National BIPC Network, run by the British Library.

1 October: Learn how to create your very own music playlist

Event details

Ageing Well Festival workshops for aged 50 and over.

Which songs have provided the soundtrack for your life? We will give you ideas to help spark memories and come up with a list of songs/music which is personal to you. We will show you how to create a free Spotify account and make your very own playlist.

If you have your own device (smartphone, tablet or i-pad) and headphones, please bring them with you. If you don’t have your own device, there will be devices available to use at the event.

4 to 31 October: Still Breathing: 100 Black voices on racism – 100 ways to change the narrative exhibition

Event details

This exhibition features excerpts from the seminal new book 'Still Breathing:100 Black Voices on Racism~100 Ways to Change the Narrative'. The book is a collection of essays by 100 Black British people about racism, edited by actresses Suzette Llewellyn (EastEnders) and Suzanne Packer (Holby City) who wanted to highlight what it means to be Black and British in the society that we live in.

4 to 31 October: Letters in lockdown exhibition

Event details

This exhibition is a collection of poetry created in a workshop run by University of Sussex. The poems are inspired by the emotional response generated by letters from adult and elderly members of the local Brighton & Hove community, the letters are about their personal experiences and memories from the last year of living in lockdown.

2 to 31 October: Our Outside - as seen from the Inside exhibition

Our Outside- as seen from the Inside #ouroutsideinside

View the Our Outside - as seen from the Inside exhibition expressing the reflections and perceptions of daily life of Coldean residents captured through the lens of a disposable camera and logbook.

The project based on the work by Studio Public and the Oiseaux Sans Tete collective was brought about by 2 occupational therapists in collaboration with:

  • Brighton University
  • Brighton & Hove Libraries
  • the Coldean community

Want to make comics but not sure where to start? Then this is the workshop for you! Come along and get inspired by some of Jaime’s artwork. Featuring pages from SUCH, SUCH WERE THE JOYS - his new graphic novel (together with writer Sean Michael Wilson) about George Orwell’s schooldays.

Library Connect returns Monday 11 October. Our 1 to 1 IT learning sessions are back at Jubilee Library.
