Naming and family ceremony

Book a celebrant registrar and find out how much it costs to arrange a naming ceremony in Brighton Town Hall or an approved venue.

What is a naming and family ceremony

Naming and family ceremonies are a way of celebrating a child's birth or adoption and to welcome the new arrival into the family and wider community.

Naming ceremonies are not restricted to babies. More than one child in the family can be included in the ceremony (for an additional charge). However, children from other families cannot be included in that ceremony. Any parent or guardian of the child can plan the ceremony. Parents do not need to be married.

Naming ceremonies have no legal status and cannot be used to change a child's name.

What happens on the day

During the ceremony there will be:

  • an introduction and welcome
  • a reading
  • naming of the child or children
  • parent's promises
  • promises by supporting adults
  • closing words

Our trained staff will work with you to create a unique and special ceremony for you and your family.
