How to request a copy of a birth certificate, how much it costs, and how to get certificates from outside Brighton & Hove.
Who can request a certificate
Anyone can request a copy of a birth certificate for a birth in Brighton & Hove. You will need to know the following information about the person who was born:
- date of birth
- place of birth
- full birth names - if you know that the person was legally adopted, phone our Register Office for advice
- father's full names
- mother's full names
- mother's maiden surname
Certificate costs

For our standard certificate service, we will issue your certificate within 15 working days, and send it to you by second class post.
If you need a certificate urgently, we offer a priority service with 24 hour delivery. You must make a priority application by midday for next day collection or first class postage.
