Find out ways you can pay your rent and how we use rent money.
As a council tenant, remember:
- to pay your rent, if you don't you could lose your home
- rent is due every week
- you must pay your rent in advance
Ways to pay your rent
You can pay your rent in a variety of ways. We encourage you to set up a regular payment.
Direct Debit
Paying by Direct Debit means:
- we set up a Direct Debit for you which will take your rent from your bank account until you change or cancel the Direct Debit
- you choose to make payments on either the 1st or 15th of the month
Standing Orders
Paying by Standing Order means:
- you can set up a regular rent payment from your bank on any day of the month
- you control the payments and there are no fines if you miss a payment
If you don't want to set up a regular payment, you can:
- pay online using our Housing Online account
- create a payment barcode to take and pay at your local PayPoint store
- use our 24-hour rent payment phone line by phoning 01273 291 908
- set up salary deductions if you're a council employee, to do this send an email to HRPayroll@brighton-hove.gov.uk
- pay by cheque if you're unable to pay any other way, send cheques to: the Housing Centre, Unit 1 Fairway Trading Estate, Eastergate Road, Brighton, BN2 4QL
If you don't pay by Direct Debit, rent and other charges are due every Monday. If you choose to pay fortnightly or monthly you must pay in advance.

- repaying loans and interest on the money we borrow to build new homes, which takes 15 pence in each £1 of rent
- repairs and maintenance
