What to do if you struggle with your allotment

What we can do to help if you struggle to look after your plot, before or after an inspection.

Before your inspection

If your plot is too large for you to manage, we could split it into two half sized plots. Please send an email to allotments@brighton-hove.gov.uk, and speak to your site representative if you’d like to arrange this.

If you’re unable to remove large trees or overgrown hedging before your inspection, let your site representative or the Allotments Service know.

If you’re unable to manage your plot due to health issues please tell us before your inspection. We will take this into account when we visit your site.

Extra time can be arranged for tenants to move large quantities of waste. Please request this before your inspection.

After your inspection

If you’ve received a notice, but you're struggling to do the work required to pass the re-inspection, you could:

If you want to request more time before your plot is re-inspected, you’ll need to have exceptional circumstances, like a medical condition or a family bereavement.

Visiting all the sites across the city takes a lot of time, so please let your site representative know your situation as soon as possible.

You can send an email to allotments@brighton-hove.gov.uk, or write to: The Allotments Service, Stanmer Nursery, Stanmer Park, Lewes Road, Brighton, BN1 9SE.

We get a lot of queries during inspection time, so it may take longer than usual for us to get back to you.
