Shintaido is a modern movement system based on traditional Japanese martial arts - principally karate and sword technique - with the emphasis on self development and artistic expression rather than self defence. Practitioners study a wide range of movements, some being open and energetic while others are soft and mediative. Shintaido classes include group work, partner practice and a number of solo exercises. The range of these exercises is enormous and includes movement suitable for people in a wide range of physical conditions. There are gentle exercises for the more elderly or infirm, looking to rediscover a more natural way of moving, and also plenty of open and energetic movement for young and healthy people seeking to challenge themselves and open up their horizons.
