Sustainability
Welcome to the Sustainability pages of our website. This area covers all things to do with social, environmental and economic sustainability. As sustainability covers all areas of the council's work, you will find many links to different aspects of our work that relate to this area.
What is sustainability?
Sustainability means many things to many people. But in the broadest of terms it involves ensuring well-being and quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come, by meeting social and environmental as well as economic needs.
It involves always considering our global impact before carrying out any action, thereby creating a culture of responsibility: "think global, act local".
The council have identified 12 key objectives within their Sustainability Strategy. These form the basis of Action Plans to support the Strategy.
The action plans have been updated for 2004-06, with the key objectives being:
- Access to basic elements of life such as food, and water
- Air quality
- Culture, recreation, tourism and leisure
- Economy and work
- Education and training
- Energy use
- Community safety
- Housing
- Land use
- Natural environment
- Transport
- Waste
