Household waste recycling sites

There are two household waste recycling sites ('tips') for Brighton & Hove residents to recycle their own household waste and household items.

Please be advised that due to the fire at Brighton HWRS last year, the site now has limited space which can lead to congestion and delays with entry. We are working very closely with Veolia who manage and operate the site on behalf of the Council to resolve this situation as quickly as possible. If you arrive at the site and find that there are queues we advise you to use the Hove HWRS as an alternative solution. We apologise for the inconvenience.

What can I recycle and dispose of?

Both sites have the following recycling facilities:

Asbestos and chemicals are only accepted at the Hove Site.  Fluorescent tubes and energy saving light bulbs are accepted at both sites. Please notify staff on arrival if you have these items for disposal.

Due to changes in legislation, from 1 April 2009, plasterboard and other gypsum based materials can no longer be disposed in landfill. With effect of 1 April, this material is restricted to four sheets or six bags per visit per month. Read our Important notice on plasterboard disposal [PDF 76kb] for further details and to find out what you need to do.

Please ask the site staff if you are unsure where to put any items you have brought or if you have difficulty unloading them out of the vehicle.

1 - Hardcore can also include ceramic items like plant pots, plates and similar.  However, these should be included in with bric-a-brac if still in a useable condition.

2 - Metals includes household items which are not solely made from metal. These items are stripped of plastic and any other material and all parts recycled where possible.

Normal opening hours - Brighton

The Brighton household waste recycling site is off Wilson Avenue, about half way up the hill on the eastern side.  Street map: Brighton household waste recycling site.  Please note that vans and vehicles with trailers are not accepted at this site.

Normal opening hours - Hove

The Hove household waste recycling site is off the Old Shoreham Road between Aldrington Avenue and Leighton Road.  Street map: Hove household waste recycling site.

Please be advised, to ensure waste is removed safely, the sites may need to close briefly for health and safety reasons. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you.

Both sites are managed by Veolia Environmental Services

Containing your waste - useful information

Please ensure that your waste is contained in small, manageable loads to bring to the sites.  The use of large "builders bags" is not recommended as they are difficult or impossible to carry up to empty into the containers. They are often used to transport bulky, heavy materials such as garden waste and rubble and cannot be carried up in one go.

If you choose to use a large bag, please bring something smaller to transport the waste up into the container to avoid risk of injury to yourself, other site users and site staff.

Site staff are available to help at all times, if you feel you cannot carry your waste up to the container yourself please ask for assistance.

Building waste from domestic properties

Construction & Demolition Waste, such as rubble, soil and wood, is not classified as household waste, regardless of whether it originates from your own home address or elsewhere. However, small quantities - equivalent to the amount that could be contained within the boot of an average saloon car or roughly six small builders bags worth - will be accepted up to a maximum of one entry per person, property or vehicle per calendar month.

Please note that if you are a landlord and are carrying out work on a property you own but do not live in, that this waste is classified as commercial and should not be taken to either Household Waste Recycling Site.

Asbestos

Hove site will accept four sheets or six bags of asbestos per household per month.  Bonded asbestos is often grey in colour and looks similar to cement - if you are in any doubt please make arrangements to have the material checked.  If handling bonded asbestos it is recommended that you wear goggles, a face mask and gloves.  Do not break the asbestos into smaller pieces or cut / saw it.  Please make sure that any smaller pieces are damped down with water and wrapped in two layers of plastic.  Before arriving at the site you must call (01273) 765286 to make sure that the site has capacity.

Green garden waste

Each year the council receives around four thousand tonnes of garden waste (hedge clippings, grass cuttings, etc) at its two household waste recycling centres. This is taken to local farms where it is shredded and composted for use on the farms. The success of this scheme relies upon the green waste being free from plastic bags, rubble, etc as this contaminates the final compost. Composting green waste is beneficial to the environment - visit our compost page for more information.

Vehicle access

Due to vehicle access restrictions, vans, trailers, open backed pick ups and larger vehicles are not permitted in the Brighton household waste recycling centre. Flatbed trucks and trailers over 4ft long are not permitted at Hove household waste recycling centre.

Trade waste

The household waste recycling sites will not accept trade waste as they are for household waste only. Visit our page on trade waste for more information.

Waste statistics

In the financial year 2004/05, the total amount of waste delivered to the two household waste recycling centres was 22,441 tonnes.  Of this, 7,503 tonnes were recycled (33.4%), excluding material sold through the bric-a-brac shop.  Of the 7,503 tonnes, 4,061 tonnes of green waste was composted.

Ragwort

Ragwort must both be brought to the sites double-bagged and disposed of in the general waste section not in the green waste section.

It is recommended that good strong gardening gloves are worn along with a mask when handling it. Ragwort is a poisonous weed which is harmful to animals, particularly livestock. When cutting the plant, ensure the heads are removed first and bagged immediately to avoid spilling any seeds, as this will cause it to grow back!

Japanese Knotweed

This weed cannot be taken to the HWRS under any circumstances. Disposal requires a professional specialist due to the extremely aggressive nature of the weed.
