A 20mph city
A phased introduction of a 20mph speed limit for residential and shopping streets in the city. The idea is to improve safety and quality of life for residents and people working or visiting the city.
Better Bus Areas - Edward Street proposals
In June 2011 the council, in partnership with Brighton & Hove Bus Company, successfully bid for £3.4million additional transport funding from the Department for Transport to introduce bus service improvements to Edward Street, Eastern Road and Valley Gardens. We are currently consulting on the proposals to improve Eastern Road.
Cycle City Ambition Bid
We've submitted a bid to the Department for Transport so we can continue to create people friendly streets in our city which support people to cycle and walk more. The schemes proposed in the bid are for extending facilities at Old Shoreham Road further west and bringing cycle facilities, pedestrians improvements and ‘pocket parks’ to Marine Parade.
Cromwell Road junction with The Drive has been identified as a location where pedestrian crossings are most needed. As a result we are planning to make this junction more accessible for pedestrians and would like your input.
Brighton Station Gateway
We now have a revised proposal to improve the area around Brighton Station, drawn up in response to feedback from the public. We've been speaking with resident groups and seeking comments from the public on the proposals and will use feedback to finalise the details.

A project to improve Lewes Road, one of Brighton’s busiest roads, and cut congestion.
Improving Seven Dials
Seven Dials is one of the worst locations for road collisions in Brighton & Hove. We want to make it better for road users, pedestrians and the local community and make it easier to get around.
North Laine cycle contraflow
Following a review and consultation with residents and businesses, cycle contraflows have been introduced in a number of streets in the North Laine. This will make the streets two–way for cyclists and, therefore, more accessible and easier to use. We've also recently installed cycle contraflow facilities in Richmond Heights.
Old Town Traffic Improvements
We are looking to improve traffic within the Old Town, the area bounded by East Street, North Street, West Street and the sea. This area forms the historic core of Brighton and we're aiming to make it a place that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Valley Gardens
Valley Gardens consists of the green spaces running from The Level down to the Old Steine and the seafront. We are developing a vision which aims to upgrade the public spaces and improve routes for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and public transport.
Road Safety Campaign
The campaign is aimed at helping to prevent collisions in the city with the message for all road users to ‘share the road, share the responsibility’.
The Shoreham Harbour Regeneration Project is now complete. The project improved equipment at traffic signals and junctions, facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, and public transport information at bus stops and rail stations.

The cycle and pedestrian improvements in the Old Shoreham Road are now finished.

Brighton & Hove Traffic Cycle Monitoring Data
Brighton & Hove City Council records the amount of traffic at key points around the city. This is done using automatic traffic counters, which are sensors built into the road, triggered when a vehicle (or bicycle) passes by. This information is used to monitor yearly trends and seasonal variation, and the traffic count data is made freely available to the public.
Local Transport Plan (LTP3)
The council’s third Local Transport Plan (LTP3) was agreed in May 2011. It sets out a long-term strategy for delivering transport improvements that looks ahead to 2026, and a three year delivery plan that outlines how the funding will be spent.
Public Realm Strategy
Brighton & Hove’s Public Realm Strategy aims to establish a co-ordinated, consistent and high quality approach to all work in the public realm, including the streetscape. The overall objective is to ensure the city’s streets and public spaces are designed to bring maximum benefit to all residents.
Public Cycle Hire
In December 2009 Brighton & Hove City Council, Transport Planning, commissioned a feasibility study to look at introducing public cycle hire to Brighton & Hove. The study provided a number of 'key findings and next steps' to progress any potential public cycle hire project. In response, we conducted a soft market test in 2011, to find how a public cycle hire scheme could viably operate in Brighton & Hove. A number of organisations responded to the soft market test and it became clear that a public cycle hire scheme in the city would require ongoing subsidy, as it could not generate sufficient revenue to run on a cost-neutral basis.
