Carer's mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
This ten week course will focus on teaching simple, effective ‘mindfulness’ practices that can be used to help build a less stressful life and prevent relapse into depression and anxiety.
What is ‘Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy’ (MBCT) and how does it work?
MBCT is being increasingly used within the NHS to help prevent stress-related difficulties and is now being offered to carers with stress, anxiety or depression to help them stay well and build a richer life. ‘Mindfulness’ is all about noticing more of the moments that make up our lives and in particular, patterns of negative thinking and feelings so we can learn to relate to them differently, especially those we cannot easily change. It is an experiential course and participants will be given a workbook and a set of CDs to enable them to practise the techniques introduced on the course at home (for 30 minutes a day). Each session lasts for two hours and it is important that participants can make a commitment to attend.
This course is funded by the council and NHS Brighton & Hove for carers who have had a carer’s assessment and are eligible for funded services.
Do I qualify for a place on the MBCT course?
To be eligible for this course you must:
- be aged 18 or over
- be providing regular and substantial care for a Brighton & Hove resident aged 18 or over
- have a current carers assessment
- have not already received a financial contribution towards services within the current financial year
- not have savings above the local authority threshold: £23, 250 individually or £46, 500 jointly
