Brighton & Hove has one of the largest allotment services in the country with 36 sites and with almost 3000 tenants. In the last three years the council has worked closely with the Brighton & Hove Allotment Federation, an organisation set up by allotment holders and each allotment holder automatically becomes a member. The federation promotes allotment gardening and works with the council in the administration of allotments.
For just £35 per year you can get a standard plot measuring approximately 125 square metres. This gives you plenty of room to grow-your-own fruit and vegetables. We also have limited mobility allotments at Weald, Foredown and Coldean.
We charge rent based on the square metre size of individual plots. For 2012-2013 we are charging 0.28p per square metre, the charge for 2011-2012 was 0.26p. The increase for 2012-2013 was agreed at the council budget meeting on 23 February 2012.
Concessions: A 25% concession is available for people 60 years of age or older, full-time students, those in receipt of long-term disability allowance and those whose majority income is derived from benefits such as income support. Concessions cannot be applied for retrospectively and proof of eligibility must be provided in advance of billing before 1st October. Applicants for senior citizen concession need only provide proof of age once after which the concession will be applied automatically each year. Those applying for student or benefit concessions need to provide proof annually.
Allotment invoices are sent out in October and you can pay your allotment fees online anytime. Remember to select ‘Allotments’ in the drop down menu and put in your invoice reference number.
