Allotments
Brighton & Hove has one of the largest allotment services in the country with 36 sites and over 2,800 tenants. In the last three years the council has worked closely with the Brighton & Hove Allotment Federation, an organisation set up by allotment holders and each allotment holder automatically becomes a member. The federation promotes allotment gardening and works with the council in the administration of allotments.
For just £33 per year you can get a standard plot measuring approximately 125 square metres. This gives you plenty of room to grow-your-own fruit and vegetables. We also have limited mobility allotments at Weald, Foredown and Coldean.
Concessions: A 25% concession is available for people over 60 years of age and for those in receipt of income support. Concessions cannot be applied retrospectively and must be applied for in advance (before invoices are sent out).
Allotment invoices are sent out in October and you can pay your allotment fees online anytime. Remember to select ‘Allotments’ in the drop down menu and put in your invoice reference number.
Temporary ban on hosepipe use
Due to the unseasonal drought conditions, Southern Water will be introducing a ban on the use hosepipes from Thursday, 5 April until further notice. In the past, hosepipe bans have not applied to allotments but, following a change in the law in 2010, the restrictions do now apply to allotments.
Southern Water will permit some exceptions. If you are disabled or a ‘blue badge’ holder you may apply directly to Southern Water for exemption by phoning 0845 278 0845.
Anyone without authorised exemption who contravenes the ban is liable to prosecution by Southern Water and a fine not exceeding £1,000.
The restrictions are likely to change over time. For up to date answers to questions, please check with Southern Water
