Congratulations to everyone nominated and thank you to the many people who submitted nominations. This year the awards received the highest level of nominations since they begun in 2008!

All the shortlisted nominees were invited to attend the awards ceremony held on Wednesday 24 October hosted at the American Express Community Stadium.  The winners were announced as follows - 

Winners of the City Sport & Physical Activity Awards 2012

Elm Grove Primary School, Freedom leisure sports school of the year

Set against a back drop of having no school playing fields, Elm Grove Primary School does a remarkable job to ensure all pupils are inspired and are able to take part in sport. A creative approach has seen the school develop an afterschool programme of 20 clubs during the year covering 11 different sports, which has been accessed by 80% of all pupils attending the school.


Janine Lewis
, Hillside School, Sport/PE Teacher of the Year 

Janine has shown exceptional dedication and resourcefulness to ensure that pupils with profound learning difficulties attending Hillside, are able to access a full and varied sport and physical activity programme. Janine has developed links with Sussex Cricket, Albion in the Community and St Luke’s Swimming Pool to provide opportunities for pupils at the school, and worked with Portslade Aldridge Academy to provide a specialist sports day for pupils run by Sports leaders at the Academy. Janine also enabled the school to access £9000 from the National Lottery to site gym equipment in the school playground to allow Hillside to run a personalised fitness programme for its pupils.


Tim Holtam, Brighton City Table Tennis Club, Coach of the Year

Tim has had an unbelievable impact on Table Tennis in the city. Coaching an incredible 30 hours each week at Brighton City Table Tennis Club, Patcham High School, and the local universities, Tim is a level 2 coach, and is working towards his level three qualification. In 2012, he has played an integral role in the City’s Ping Programme, developed afterschool clubs at Patcham 3 nights a week, coached the City College Under 19’s Boys to the national schools final, and Sussex University players to gold medals in the BUCS individual championships. He also is committed to using table tennis to develop young people positively and is an expert role model for young people at Brighton City Table Tennis Club, six of whom he has mentored to take their initial Table Tennis qualifications themselves.


Cameron Heath, Brighton & Hove Hockey Club, Volunteer of the Year

Cameron volunteers as the club development officer at Brighton & Hove Hockey Club. Cameron deserves recognition for his extraordinary role in helping to develop a new home for the club at Blatchington Mill School.  Cameron helped secure lottery funding, and to develop a strong partnership with Blatchington Mill School. He also helped steer the club through a complex and challenging planning process. He has worked tirelessly on this project, and his calm determination, talent and long-term vision for sport (especially hockey) in Brighton and Hove is something we all should celebrate and aspire to.

 

Ghislaine Picchoo accepts the Active for Life Participation Award on behalf of the 50+ Tai Chi Group from Kate Lawson, (Health Promotion Lead Manager, NHS Brighton & Hove) 50+ Tai Chi Group, Active for Life Participation Award

This community tai chi group provides opportunities for older people to be active in their community. Most participants are women aged 65+, with several in their 80s. The group provides a valuable healthy activity, which has been important in helping some of its members with medical conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, replacement joints, muscle tension and back pain to lead more active lifestyles. The group also goes beyond simply an activity class, with organised social activities and tasters in other activities, and has helped address isolation amongst older people in their community


Brighton & Hove Hockey Club, TAKEPART Club of the Year

One of the biggest hockey clubs in the south of England with 16 adult and junior teams.  The club’s stand out success in 2012 has been to complete a long term project to create a home for the club with the construction of two new artificial pitches in partnership with Blatchington Mill School opening in September this year. This has created a real legacy for hockey in the city, however the club has not stopped there. Over the past year the club has increased its membership by 10%, developing new sessions for Under 6’s and also Back to Hockey sessions to encourage adults back into the game and a fantastic Hockey zone with England Hockey at the TAKEPART 2012 Launch Event.


A2Arts Dance Academy Team of the Year

In 2012, A2 Arts qualified to represent their country as part of 'Team England' in the finals of 'Dance World Cup' held in Villach, Austria in June 2012. They represented the country and competed against 32 other nations and returned victorious scooping 2 Gold’s and 1 Silver Medal and also received the accolades including  Best Hip Hop Group Award, Best Modern Group Award and  Best Overall Group Dance Award

This year Jack became double National Champion and silver medallist at in the sprint, 500m pursuit and Keirin respectively, and is now the strongest U-16’s male sprinter in the country. He just had been selected for the British Cycling Olympic Development Squad. As someone who first tried track cycling during the TAKEPART Festival in 2008, he has come along way and with hard work will continue to go far.

In 2012 Sonay Kartal was ranked at number 1 British Tennis Player in the '10 and under' age group, and also number one in Sussex at the '12 and under' age group. This summer Sonay represented the country, competing internationally against Belgium.


Charlie Grice, Sports Personality of the Year

Charlie’s development over the past year has marked him out as one to watch in the coming years for UK middle distance running. He made his first senior final at the Olympic Trials, coming second to Mo Farrah in the heats. Charlie also ran in the Emsley Carr Mile, one of the most prestigious mile races in the Athletics calendar, he emulated the achievements of Roger Bannister back in 1954, by running a sub 4minute mile with a time of 3:57:90. The time put him third on the UK under 20 All Time List, ahead of Steve Ovett, and took nearly two seconds off Ovett’s thirty- eight year old Sussex under 20 Record!


Trevor Carney, Brighton Electricity FC
- Special contribution Award

‘Trev’ has shown outstanding support and commitment to community sport in Brighton & Hove for 45 years, and has been tireless in their dedication to help others enjoy playing football. He first joined Brighton Electricity FC in 1967, and has been involved in the club for through 45 consecutive seasons of football. His contribution to local football over the years has been superb and through their hard work and dedication, hundreds of people have been able to enjoy grassroots football. Without people like Trevor grassroots football would simply not exist.
