Flyering, flyering licences and flyposting

large icon of flyers and posters

A lot of flyering and putting up posters takes place across the city to advertise events, businesses and political messages. You must however ensure that you are not breaking the law before doing this.

Flyering

Flyering is the process of giving out free leaflets, cards and other free printed material. There are restrictions on where and when you can do this, in some areas you require a licence which you must display. Please follow the information below to find out where you need a licence, how much they cost and how to get one.

Alternatives to flyering

More and more people are relying on websites, social media and word of mouth to find out about events, gigs and club nights. As an alternative to flyering and posters why not advertise your events online?

There are many websites available to promote local events, we have worked closely with one of them called mondaynightout.co.uk

Flyering licences

Flyering often creates a large amount of litter as some people will just drop flyers on the floor. The flyering licence covers the cost of the extra work required to clear this. If you are found flyering without a licence in an area which requires one you may have your materials removed and could be fined.

You are required to have a flyering licence if flyering within the area shown on the map below. This area roughly covers central Brighton, Brighton beach and the Brighton station area.

There are different charges depending what times you will be flyering and the length of the licence. Please see the list below for details.

Once you know which licence you require please fill out the application form either online, or by downloading, printing and completing the form below and returning it to us. If you complete the online form please remember that you must still send payment to us by post. We will then ensure your licences are sent through to you within 10 working days.

Flyposting

Flyposting is putting up posters or stickers on properties or street items without consent from the owner. It is illegal.

Examples of this would be:

  • sticking posters onto boarded up shops advertising a gig
  • attaching a poster to a lamppost advertising a business
  • putting stickers onto road signs showing political statements

Our street cleansing team remove flyposting from across the city. Offenders caught flyposting will have their materials removed and could receive a fine. This is because flyposting can encourage further illegal activity such as fly-tipping and graffiti.
