Access and the local environment

night time montage

Our excellent partnership working with the Brighton & Hove Taxi Forum and Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company have added to the feeling of a safer city.

First Capital Connect have reinstated their late night train service which  makes it more feasible for people to visit the theatre.

Brighton & Hove is the only English city, outside London, to operate a commercially viable night bus service.

  • Real time information signs at bus stops help people feel safer and have won the LGC e-govt award in 2005.
  • A texting bus information service‘txt 4 ur next bus’ has been introduced throughout the city.

The council's JourneyOn website offers travel information for Brighton & Hove. With real time bus and traffic information plus our unique journey planner it enables people to plan a route across the city and work out the time, cost, carbon emissions and even the number of calories they'll burn along the way.  It also keeps people informed about transport related events such as Bike Week and Car Free Day.

Brighton & Hove City Council became the first UK local authority to launch an iPhone application (app).  The council launched the free real time bus time information app which was created by Rick Thompson, a local resident, in September.  The Brighton & Hove Bus Real Time Infoboard app updates automatically to show live bus times across the city’s network.   Users can choose their nearest bus stop and get real time live information directly to their phone.

Perceptions of how safe people feel on the streets can be affected by low level crime such as grafitti.

  • We have put up images on empty buildings around the city and are using creative lighting installations to make places in the city more accessible.
  • Investment in the Cultural Quarter and New Road has encouraged more restaurants and cafes to flourish resulting in an offer of different types of evening activity.

The council’s refuse and recycling department organises its shifts across the city and the seafront to focus on the highest priority need, including clearing up after events.
