What is the Core Skills and Knowledge Programme?

The Core Skills and Knowledge Programme [1.3 MB] provides development opportunities for everyone working with children and young people in Brighton & Hove, so that they can work together to improve outcomes for children in our city.  The programme is based on the Children’s Workforce Development Council’s Common Core of Skills and Knowledge. This explains that everyone working with children, young people and families should have a common set of skills and knowledge in six areas:

  • Effective communication and engagement
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child
  • Supporting transitions
  • Multi-agency working
  • Sharing information

The programme is open to all those who work with children and young people. This includes:

  • Children and Young People’s Trust (CYPT) staff, including school staff
  • Other public sector workers
  • Community and Voluntary Sector (CVS) staff and volunteers
  • Foster carers
  • Anyone else who works with children and young people even if that is only part of their role

The programme is designed to be multi-agency with staff from different professional backgrounds trained together to help promote integrated working. Training is delivered, where possible, by experienced local practitioners in the CYPT or CVS, who share their expertise and ensure training is relevant to local services.

Cancellation Policy

The Workforce Development Team charges for non-attendance and late cancellations (within 5 working days) and re-invests this money into additional learning provision.  The courses that this applies to are clearly shown in the details for each individual course in the Core Skills and Knowledge Programme [1.3 MB].

Where the Workforce Development Team will apply a cancellation charge, this is currently £50 per course (the average cost of a training place), irrespective of the reason for absence.  If another team member is able to fill the place, no charge will be made.
