Brighton & Hove - a One Planet City?
A week of sustainability-themed workshops took place in September 2008, designed to gather your ideas towards creating the proposed Brighton & Hove 'One Planet Living Plan'.
Brighton & Hove has a high ecological footprint. It was recently calculated that if everyone on the planet used resources as we do in this city, we would need at least three and a half planets to sustain us. If we want to develop lifestyles that are consistent with 'One Planet' ways of living and preserve a sustainable quality of life both for us and future generations, we need to take action now.
The week-long series of themed workshops was delivered on behalf of 2020 Community Partnership (the Local Strategic Partnership for Brighton & Hove), by Bio Regional and Brighton & Hove City Council. These free workshops gave local residents the opportunity to participate in creating the city's proposed 'One Planet Living Plan' and help create the strategies that can help reduce Brighton & Hove's environmental impact.
The workshop forums were for everyone within Brighton & Hove to demonstrate their support for the initiative, test the viability of some proposed strategies and to describe their aspirations for Brighton & Hove. The aim is to create a 'shared vision' for a sustainable city based around the proposed 'One Planet Living Plan'. This plan will also contribute to developing priorities for other sustainability strategies within the city including the Climate Change Strategy.
Workshops focused on the TEN key principles of sustainability developed by BioRegional and the World Wildlife Fund - sustainable energy (zero carbon), zero waste, local sustainable materials and food, natural habitats and wildlife, the local economy and fair trade, sustainable transport, sustainable water and the other key issues of culture and heritage, health and happiness.
There were also guided visits to local showcases such as the One Brighton Development in Brighton's New England Quarter, Earthship Brighton and the Jubilee Library.
The workshop presentations and notes are now available on the Bioregional website. If you would like any further information please email sustainability@brighton-hove.gov.uk
The 'One Planet Living Plan' is co-sponsored by Brighton & Hove City Council and BioRegional Quintain Ltd, with its joint venture partner Crest Nicholson plc.
