Overview & Scrutiny
Overview & Scrutiny is a key part of the council's decision making process. The commission and five committees aim to add value to the council services that you use by monitoring performance, developing and reviewing policy and holding the executive to account.
Scrutiny is carried out in an open and transparent manner and you are welcome to attend our meetings. Further details are available on the pages for each committee.
New legislation means that overview and scrutiny has a growing significance locally and nationally. A wide range of organisations and agencies, for example, the NHS and Community Safety, are involved, in order to drive forward our shared priorities for the benefit of the whole city. Overview and scrutiny committees are an important mechanism for councillors to represent their wards and are a focus for stakeholder and community involvement.
What do Scrutiny Committees do?
The commission and the five committees represent powerful public forums through which councillors can:
- develop and review major policies
- hold the executive to account for their decisions and actions
- review the performance and impact of decisions and policy
- oversee the council’s strategic direction
