Dodgy food shops fined

A Brighton kebab shop and a baker’s in Portslade have been fined a total of £5,400 and ordered to pay £4,106 costs by magistrates for breaching  food hygiene regulations.

The prosecutions were brought by the council’s food safety team after routine inspections found dirty conditions and serious breaches of basic food hygiene regulations at both premises.

At the kebab shop, for example, grease and dirt was found on the doner kebab meat slicer which had not been washed from the day before. At the bakery there were cobwebs on the floors and equipment.

Amgad Saif, the former owner of Favourite Kebab, 15 Preston Street, Brighton pleaded guilty to 10 food hygiene offences under food safety legislation. He was fined a total of £4,000 and ordered to pay £2,404 costs.

Brighton magistrates heard that new owners had since taken over the premises and standards had improved. It was understood the new owners were intending to change the name of the business in the near future.

Mikail Nasim, the owner of Ye Old Baker’s Shop, in Mill Lane, Portslade, pleaded guilty at Brighton magistrates court to seven food hygiene offences under food safety legislation. He was fined a total off £1,400 and ordered to pay £1,702 costs.
