Disabled groups back blue badge clampdown
A clampdown on the misuse of disabled parking badges is underway across the city. Police and parking attendants are running joint patrols to spot stolen badges and will take action against any able-bodied drivers found using them fraudulently.
The jont initiative, called Operation Bluebird, aims to make sure disabled parking spaces are available for the people who really need them. Genuine badge holders will not be affected by the crackdown, and disabled groups have welcomed the initiative.
Fraudulent use of the badges is a big problem – around a fifth of car thefts are down to thieves targeting blue badges. Other badges are misused by people ‘borrowing’ them from relatives or friends.
The clampdown will be ongoing throughout the year. Drivers found fraudulently using blue badges can be fined up to £1,000 and have their vehicle towed away.
