Tarner Park reclaimed for locals
The council has called time on graffiti in Tarner Park in Brighton. Cleansing officers from Cityclean, the council's refuse, recycling and street cleansing service, have been working hard to remove the blanket of graffiti at the park to provide a safe, clean and pleasant area for everyone.
Graffiti has been present in the park for over 20 years, but over the last few years has completely taken over. For the past 12 months the council has tried to work with the graffiti artists, but some refused to ‘play ball’.
The clear-up project has the full backing of Sussex Police who are supporting it with regular patrols.
Environment councillor Geoffrey Theobald said: “Managing graffiti in Tarner Park hasn’t worked and some local people have told us that they avoid the area. This cannot be allowed to continue. I’m delighted that we’re taking action to reclaim this park for local residents.”
The council and local resident groups, including the Friends of Tarner, are working together to improve the park so that everyone can use it.
Once the graffiti blitz has finished, it is hoped that local people will be encouraged back to the park by a wide ranging programme of activities. These include play, sport and conservation events, community art projects and tea and coffee facilities.
