The Community Safety Team, in partnership with Sussex Police is leading the fight against LGBT hate crime  working with various LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) community organisations.

In a first for Sussex, the Police, Statutory Agencies and various LGBT community groups and businesses are coordinating an extensive campaign to promote the police and Partnership Community Safety Team response to violent and non violent homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (LGBT hate) crime. It is designed to reassure members of the LGBT community about the reasons for these police initiatives. The LGBT community will be encouraged further to report hate crime and in the coming months will be reassured of the different levels of support for victims, especially in giving evidence, to ensure the successful convictions of offenders.

Much of the activity will centre on the areas of St James’s Street in Brighton (often called the ‘gay village’)  and the seafront late at night where much of the violent crime has been recorded.

Historically there tends to be a seasonal increase in violent crime in the warmer months.

This year a specialist team of uniformed officers has been set up specifically to target the groups of youths who are mostly responsible for these offences as well as general anti-social behaviour in the city.  All LGBT hate crime investigations in this area are carried out by the police Anti-Victimisation Unit.  Police will also be working closely with the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team to consider ASBOs in addition to criminal prosecutions.
