The council's Carbon Management Programme
The need to manage carbon emissions has become increasingly important as the full impact of the effect that emissions have on changes to the earth's climate has become apparent.Reducing our carbon emissions
The council aims to significantly reduce its carbon emissions and by example lead local residents, businesses and organisations towards the goal of a low carbon city.
In order to achieve this we are participating in the Carbon Trust’s Local Authority Carbon Management Programme. Participation in the programme was a key recommendation in our 2006 Climate Change Action Plan.
We aim to reduce our carbon emissions by 20 per cent from our 2005-2006 level of emissions by April 2012. This commits us to reducing our emissions by an average of four per cent every year for the next five years.
The council's carbon footprint
The carbon footprint measures carbon emissions that are under the council's direct control. These include carbon emissions from council buildings, fleet vehicles and street lighting.
Our carbon footprint for 2006-07 is on target. Unadjusted figures show a six per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in 2006-7 from 2005-06. Taking into account the removal of some buildings from the council portfolio in the 2006-07 figures and corrections required due to estimated fuel bills, we estimate the true reduction to be about four per cent.
The reduction is as a result of improved energy efficiency and awareness across the organisation, highlighted by the council's recent commitment to the 10:10 campaign.
Background
Our carbon management strategy and implementation plan was approved by the Policy & Resources Committee on 29 March 2007. The five year plan contains detailed information about the council's carbon footprint, a strategy for managing carbon emissions and a programme of projects aimed at reducing emissions.
