The future of waste and recycling in Brighton & Hove

Your views have helped to shape the future of waste management in the city.

More than 1,000 questionnaires were completed by residents and the council talked with community groups and organisations across Brighton & Hove in 2009 to draw up a new waste management strategy for the city.

The good news is that residents in the city are recycling more of their rubbish than ever before, with recycling rates doubling from 14% in 2003/4 to 28% in 2008/09. But with our local landfill site now closed because it is full, and the cost of disposing of waste increasing, our strategy will set out how can deal with waste for the next ten years.

The strategy sets our our aim to build on achievements so far and recycle more of the city's waste. Our target is to recycle and compost 32% of our waste by 2012/13 and to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill from 60% to just 2% in 10 years. One area we'll be tackling is food waste. Food is the single biggest item in our waste bins and accounts for 35% of all the waste we throw away.

We will be offering subsidised food digesters and wormeries and looking particularly into options for composting in flats. We'll also be running a campaign to help everyone reduce the food waste they produce.

We provide a doorstep recycling collection service to 114,000 households across the city and the strategy describes how we'll be improving the service to residents.

In the next year we will work to further improve the reliability of the refuse and recycling collection service, as well as improving the quality of service residents receive when they contact us either by phone, via the web or in writing.

We will be working more closely with residents and businesses to ensure their views and requirements inform how we deliver services.

The council is also preparing a Waste and Minerals Development Framework which will set out the planning policies for waste and recycling facilities.
