Hove to Hangleton cycle route
The Hove to Hangleton cycle route (National Cycle Network regional route 82) was completed in 2008.
The route, which connects the seafront to the Downs at the Devil's Dyke Railway Trail in Hangleton, and goes through several parks including Hove Park, plus the City Park office development, schools and Hove station, forms an important north-south link in the city’s cycle network.
It is now been re-routed along approximately 1400m of its length.
The re-routing
The re-routing takes cyclists away from a poorly lit, width-constrained, overgrown shared use footway/cycle path leading onto Downland Avenue. Instead it routes cyclists along the more suitable Nevill Road section where formal cycle provision already exists in places.
The new route bisects Hove Park along The Droveway and, travelling northbound, joins Nevill Road at the signalised junction with Woodland Drive. Cycle Advanced Stop Lines (ASLs) are provided on each 'arm'.
Continuing northbound along Nevill Road, the re-route bears left onto Court Farm Road, then continues across a second signalised junction of Clarke Avenue and Hangleton Road (also with ASLs on each 'arm'.)
The re-route continues along Clarke Avenue and then turns right onto Downland Drive, where it rejoins the existing Regional Route 82.
The route is aimed at cyclists of all abilities, but is designed to particularly appeal to new or inexperienced cyclists, such as young people and families, and should also help encourage healthy leisure pursuits.
