service description
The Teenage Pregnancy Team work with local agencies to ensure that young people receive information about contraception and pregnancy, with the aim of reducing the risk of unintentional pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's). The team also support young people who have become teenage parents.

In June 1999 the Social Exclusion Unit produced a report on teenage pregnancy which reported that the UK had the highest teenage pregnancy rate within Western Europe.
This is an area which the government felt needed attention and so in 1999 the Prime Minister launched The National Teenage Pregnancy Strategy. The two national targets in this strategy are to:
• halve the under 18 conception rate in England by 2010 (with an interim reduction target of 15% by 2004
• increase the participation of teenage mothers in education, training or work to 60% by 2010 to reduce the risk of long term social exclusion
