£3 Million boost for cycling

A £3 million investment is making Brighton and Hove a European centre of excellence for cycling.

The city is leading the way in promoting cycling as a popular, safe, and healthy way to get around.

Brighton & Hove was one of six towns to originally receive funding from Cycling England, as part of the Cycling Town programme, to help it significantly increase cycling levels (2005-2008.)

The city received further funding in the second phase (2008-2011), when it was joined by a further 11 towns and one city (Bristol.)

The city was chosen by the Department for Transport from 30 authorities to receive an annual grant of £500,000 for three years to continue to encourage cycling in the city.  The council is matching this funding each year, totalling a £3 million investment in cycling.

The financial and expertise resources as a result of Cycling Town status is significantly improving the experience of cycling in the city.

Key developments are:

  • developing quality, European pilot projects of engineering excellence reflecting European best practice
  • a high profile Walking and Cycling Chartermark (involving leading businesses and individuals)
  • developing a wide range of partners to promote cycling as a friendly, fun and accessible transport mode for all.
