David Cooper, KS3 ICT Consultant

New ICT Bulletin

Key Messages

This academic year is a key year for Secondary ICT. A National target of 75% level 5 and above has been set as a challenge. Pupils in year 9 may have had a varied experience in primary schools and KS3 to date, but with the guidance available from the Strategy and the QCA modules there are enough examples of potential projects demonstrating contexts and expectations to allow pupils to create work to meet their potential.

Using Assessment for Learning opportunities within ICT lessons, pupils should be given opportunities to review and evaluate their work and the work of their peers. The next crucial stage is to give pupils the opportunities to refine their work, thus allowing the higher level.

Pupils should be aware of the targets for the module and what they need to do to improve.

Key Features of Level 5 work

  • Pupils will use a range of ICT tools to solve a problem and not just text and graphics
  • Information will be refined, combined and presented in an appropriate way to meet the needs of their audience.
  • Pupils will justify their choice of content, structure and fitness for purpose
  • Pupils will show evidence of checking and evaluating the accuracy and plausibility of the information to be used within their solutions.
  • Pupils show a clear understanding of the ‘input, process, output’ sequence of events.
