Brighton & Hove City Council runs school-based Bikeability training courses throughout the year for children in years five and six. School based courses are free to participants.
The course is carried out in two levels:
Level 1
The children learn to carry out a simple bike check, safe start and stopping procedures, turning left and right and they learn how to use the gears on their bicycles. The training takes place on the playground. Level 1 is two sessions of one and a half hours on consecutive days.
Level 2
The children revise level 1. They learn to turn left and right and pass parked vehicles. They learn road signs. The training takes place on the road near to the school where suitable junctions can be found. Level 2 is five sessions of one and a half hours on consecutive days.
Level 3 (Years 7 and 8)
The children revise levels 1 and 2. They learn to work on junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, multi lanes and changing lanes. The training takes place on busy roads and complex junctions where suitable junctions can be found.
