frequently asked questions
Can I dispose of household building waste at the refuse and recycling centres?
Construction and demolition waste, such as rubble, soil, wood and asbestos, are not classified as household waste, regardless of whether it comes from your home or elsewhere. However, small quantities - equivalent to the amount that could be contained within the boot of an average saloon car or roughly six small builders bags - will be accepted. This is to a maximum of one entry per person, property or vehicle per calendar month.
What happens if I don't have a commercial waste collection?
If you are unable to demonstrate that you have given your waste to a registered waste carrier or taken it to a licensed waste site you could be fined an unlimited amount. The council's waste enforcement officers have successfully prosecuted businesses in these circumstances.
Why isn't the cost of trade refuse collection included in business rates
The cost of trade waste collection is not included in business rates because the amount and type of waste generated by businesses can be very different. Brighton & Hove City Council does not provide a trade waste service. Please see our webpages on business and charity recycling and refuse collections for further information.
