News Flush!
Here is where you will find the lastest information on public toilets in Brighton & Hove.
New toilets opened at Hove Cemetary South
We are pleased to be able to announce that the new accessible toilet has opened at Hove Cemetary South (from 26 June 2010).
The toilets will be open from 0900-1700 Monday to Saturday, 1100-1730 Sundays.
New temporary toilets at Rottingdean Undercliff
We are pleased to be able to announce the installation of some temporary toilets at Rottingdean Undercliff for the summer months. The toilets will be open from Saturday 29 May to Sunday 5 September and will be in addition to the existing accessible toilets. The toilets will be serviced and maintained by Wettons Cleaning services and the opening hours are 09:00 - 20:00.Sounds of Radio 4
A busy public toilet seems an unlikely place to find a radio sound crew. But when Brighton based Pier Productions needed toilet flushing sound effects for a Radio 4 adaptation of the book Gentleman Jim, by local author Raymond Briggs (broadcast 4 May 2010), we were happy to help!
The company was quite specific about what they were looking for an older style loo with a pull chain cistern and, although most of our toilets now have modern fixtures and fittings, the lower promenade toilets near the pier fitted the bill perfectly.
Changing Places Toilet
A new Changing Places toilet has opened on 1 October 2009 at the public toilets located at The Colonnade, Madeira Drive in Brighton. Wetton Cleaning Services have sponsored the installation and equipment.
The Changing Places Consortium launched a campaign on behalf of the thousands of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and their carers, and the many other disabled people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
Changing Places are toilets with enough space for disabled people and their carers, and the right equipment which includes a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist. There are almost no public Changing Places toilets in the United Kingdom and providing these toilets in public places makes a dramatic difference to the lives of people who need these facilities.
Thousands of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities cannot use standard accessible toilets. They need support from one or two carers to use the toilet, or a height adjustable changing bench where a carer can safely change their continence pad. They also need a hoisting system so they can be helped to transfer safely from their wheelchair to the toilet or changing bench.
The toilets at The Colonnade, Madeira Drive in Brighton are within a large building where we have a separate room which can be converted to a Changing Places toilet. This location is ideally placed for visitors to Brighton and Hove as well as residents. It is the first Changing Places toilet in Sussex.
The opening hours are:
09:00 to 18:00 (October to day preceeding Good Friday)
08:00 to 20:00 (Good Friday to end of September)
