Parking restrictions
Parking on a single yellow line
Generally, you cannot park on single yellow lines between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. You should always check street signs for confirmation of regulations as the hours when single yellow lines operate vary.
Parking on a double yellow line
This is not permitted at any time of the day or night, seven days a week - not even for a few minutes. Double yellow lines denote an area where it can be dangerous to park, or where leaving your vehicle can be a hazard to other road users. Those who park on double yellow lines with a double or single kerb mark will be issued a parking ticket (Penalty Charge Notice).
Parking in a loading bay
These areas are for the specific use of vehicles that wish to load and unload. Some bays are for the specific use of commercial vehicles only. You should always check street signs for confirmation of regulations. Those who park in a loading bay without loading or unloading will receive a parking ticket.

Parking in a residents parking zone
These areas are for the use of residents who must display a valid resident parking permit, or their visitors who must display a valid visitors permit in some of the controlled parking zones (check your zone for availability). Motorists who park in a residents parking zone without a residents parking permit will receive a parking ticket. More about residents parking.
Parking outside the bay
Parking bays are clearly marked and allow enough room for most cars or vans. If any part of your vehicle is parked outside the bay, you are liable to get a parking ticket. This is because bad parking can be a hazard to other road users and pedestrians - and can prevent other people from getting a parking space. Please park considerately.
Parking for Blue Badge Holders & Disabled Parking Bays
Parking restrictions are relaxed for disabled blue badge holders, making parking easier for those who are less mobile. Disabled parking bays normally operate 24 hours, seven days a week.
If you are not correctly displaying a current badge and you park in a bay reserved for disabled drivers, you are likely to get a parking ticket. Blue badge holders can park on single and double yellow lines for up to three hours where there are no loading restrictions provided that a time disc is dislpayed and set at the time of arrival. More about parking for people with disabilities.
When using a Disabled parking bay it is important to display your badge, if you do not display it correctly then a PCN will be issued. If you have not displayed it at all and have parked in a disabled parking bay, you may well be removed and taken to the city car pound.
Parking for solo motorcycles
There are a number of spaces in the city centre reserved for solo motorcyclists. Do not park a vehicle in a space intended for a motorcycle or you may receive a parking ticket.
Pay and Display
There are pay and display machines in the city. Follow these simple guidelines to use them properly:
- depending on where you park, parking is restricted to a maximum stay. Please check the details on the front of each machine.
- have plenty of change for the machine before you set out
- read the information on the front of the machine to ensure that you are paying the correct amount
- display your parking voucher inside the windscreen of your car and check that it can be seen
- leave plenty of time to get back to your vehicle. Parking attendants will not know whether you have been delayed and will issue a parking ticket if you overstay
- if a pay and display machine is not working either park elsewhere or use another pay and display machine within the same zone
- do not purchase additional time when your original voucher expires
Where can I get more information?
- find parking facilities using the NCP Car Park Finder
- contact our Parking Information Centres
Please note, you cannot challenge your parking ticket by telephone. It has to be done in writing to Parking Services. For more details about this see how to appeal against a parking ticket.
