The natural process of grieving

Bereavement is an experience that all of us encounter sometime in our lives, yet we talk about it very little.  As this is the case we only have a limited opportunity to learn about how to cope with the loss of a loved one, a relative or a friend.

Grieving is a natural process that can take place after any kind of loss.  When a loved one passes away this can be a very overpowering emotion that has to run its course.  There is a whole succession of different feelings that can take time to go through and must not be hurried.  Although people are all individuals, the order they go through these feelings are very similar.

If you want to find out more about the different stages of grief and bereavement, together with advice on how to cope, you can read Coping with Bereavement [MS Word 174kb]

There are also a number of organisations which can provide support for those coping with bereavement.
