help with travel costs if you have special educational needs
EMA students
If you were 16 or 17 on 1 September 2008, you can apply for Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2008/09. If you qualify, you can get up to £30 a week for your living costs, including any costs you may incur in travelling to college.
If you are getting EMA, we will not normally consider you for help with your travel unless your weekly costs exceed £10 or you have special educational needs.
Travel discounts
You may be eligible for a discount on your bus or rail travel.
The discounts you can get apply regardless of whether or not you qualify for EMA and regardless of your family's income.
Help with travel costs - do you qualify and what can you get?
If you have special educational needs and you/your family/your school or college feel you cannot travel by public transport, your case will be looked at on an individual basis and specialist advice sought if we feel it is needed. If taxi transport is provided, it will be free.
To apply, ask your school or college for form PS1 and return it to us when completed.
