What is Eco-Schools?

eco_schools_logo

Eco-schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey and provides a framework to help embed these principles.

Eco-schools offers a well defined, controllable way for environmental issues to be taken from the curriculum and applied to the day to day running of a school. This process helps pupils to recognise the importance of environmental issues.

How to join the eco-schools programme

  • first visit the eco-schools website to find full information about the scheme and register your school
  • when you register your school you will receive a free CD-ROM handbook to guide you through the eco-schools programme
  • then email sustainability@brighton-hove.gov.uk Our environmental education officer works with eco-schools in Brighton & Hove and can offer you support and advice

What are the stages and who needs to be involved?

Eco-Schools is a long-term programme with four stages: registration, implementating the Eco-Schools programme, applying for an award and award renewal (every two years). It requires:

  • a willingness to involve children in decision making and action at every stage
  • active involvement of staff
  • a willingness to take action to investigate long term change

What are the themes?

The eco-schools programme focuses on nine themes: biodiversity, energy, global perspectives, healthy living, litter, school grounds, transport, waste minimisation and water.
