Graffiti

The council actively removes graffiti from street furniture (bins & benches etc), signs and council owned bus shelters and rapidly responds to reported offensive and racist graffiti.  However, we do not have the resources to remove graffiti from privately owned property, so if your home or business suffers from graffiti vandals, here are some tips to help you deal with it.

How to report graffiti

  • to graffiti on property without permission is a criminal offence and should be reported to Sussex Police.  You can call their non-emergency service on (0845) 6070999
  • the council is working closely with Sussex Police to try to reduce repeat offences.  If you are victim of a graffiti attack, please send us a picture and an approximate date and time of attack, with a contact number for the police to get in contact with you if necessary
  • report racist or offensive graffiti to Cityclean

How do I get rid of graffiti on my property?

You can remove graffiti yourself, either by using chemicals or by painting it over. If you have a lot of graffiti on your building it may be cost effective to get a specialist contractor to do the work.

Using chemicals

The successful removal of graffiti depends on the type of surface, the product that has been used to do the graffiti and whether the surface has an anti-graffiti coating. You could try cleaning with white spirit, paintbrush cleaner or paint remover, ask your local DIY shop to recommend a product or contact a company for specialist chemicals and advice.  Always test the graffiti removing agent on a small area first, follow the manufacturer's instructions and wear appropriate safety clothing.

Painting over it

  • paint over as quickly as possible
  • use a special product to seal the surface and help prevent the graffiti bleeding through
  • paint the whole area, not just a patch
  • try to colour match with the original and keep a pot of spare paint when you re-decorate
  • consider applying an anti-graffiti coating

Making removal easier

  • use good quality gloss paint whenever possible as it is the easiest to clean
  • use a protective coating

Preventing graffiti on your property

  • the quicker and more often graffiti is removed makes it less likely that the vandals will strike again
  • imaginative and novel solutions, such as three dimensional iron work, mosaics or climbing plants on walls to create an uneven surface, form a key part in eradicating graffiti as well as adding to the street scene.
  • make sure your property has good security measures to prevent access by vandals eg security lighting, CCTV, locks and fences.
