frequently asked questions
What is the law regarding dog fouling?
The dogs (fouling of land) act 1996 applies to all our parks and amenity areas - people who do not clean up after a dog in their charge can be prosecuted, the maximum penalty upon conviction is currently £1000. For more information contact our animal welfare team tel: (01273) 292929.
What is involved in holding an event in a park?
The parks are used for all types of events including dog shows, celebrations, visiting circuses and horse trials. The council need to be informed of events and permission has to be obtained. in most cases, you will be expected to demonstrate that you have public liability insurance. You will also be responsible for clearing up any mess left behind and carrying out any repairs which result from the event. For further information or to arrange an event, contact the events office on (01273) 292711 or 292712.
Can I have a small barbeque in my local park with just a few friends?
Generally, no as there is a bylaw prohibiting fires on public land both for public safety and environmental reasons. However, if it is part of a larger event then permission would have to be obtained and a number of precautions taken.
Does the council have any community sports pitches?
We maintain a wide range of facilities for most sports, ie football, rugby, cricket, bowls, croquet, baseball and even stoolball. We also have two mini golf courses and two major golf courses at Waterhall and Hollingbury - the latter being a championship course.
