Foredown Tower camera

Due to ongoing contractual discussions between Brighton & Hove City Council and the Hove & Adur Sea Cadets regarding a lease agreement, Foredown Tower is currently closed. It is hoped that the building, under its new arrangements, will be open later in 2010 when demonstrations of the Camera Obscura will once again take place. As soon as firmer details of the new arrangements are available, they will be posted on this website.

Foredown Tower Countryside Centre offers a variety of displays and exhibits about a wide range of subjects including:

  • wildlife, natural habitats and conservation issues
  • landscape and countryside interpretation
  • local history and archaeology
  • astronomy and the night sky

A highlight is to climb the converted Edwardian water tower itself, to the viewing gallery which offers 360° views from the Isle of Wight to the South Downs and houses the largest camera obscura in south east England - a unique optical device that is used to observe the surrounding landscape, sun and sky.

The ‘hidden’ Wildlife Site offers an introduction to the countryside in a safe and controlled environment, encompassing woodland management, pond life and an understanding of the natural rhythms of the seasons.
