Brighton & Hove Future Jobs Fund
Providing skills, training and employment for young people, are key elements of the council’s strategy to make Brighton & Hove a city of opportunity. Even in times of austerity it is important to look to the future with workforce and post recession planning and ensure that we create the best opportunities for the next generation.
Councillor Ayas Fallon-Khan,
Cabinet member for Enterprise, Employment & Major Projects
Background
Brighton & Hove City Council has been successful in its bid for the Future Jobs Fund money and will lead a programme that will create 500 jobs in the city between October 2009 till March 2011.
The bid was developed jointly by the city council’s Culture & Enterprise, Children & Young People’s Trust and Hove YMCA, together with a wide range of employers and organisations.
The jobs will be created under three distinct elements, targeting different employer sectors and sizes. These are:
- Public Sector Jobs - with a focus upon the city council, schools and colleges, university and the local primary care trust, (PCT). An estimated 100 new jobs will be created over the 18 months period.
- Commercial, Third Sector and Social Enterprise jobs – 150 jobs will be created via an open application process to allow large companies, smallmedium enterprises,(SMEs) and third sector organisations and micro businesses to offer new jobs.
- Recycling and Environmental Jobs – led by Hove YMCA, in their recently acquired warehouse and training centre to develop a recycled furniture and white goods business to encourage re-use and reduce landfill to improve the environment. One hundred jobs will be created to provide young people with roles in all elements of this.
The jobs are only for 18-24 year olds who have been claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) for between six and 12 months.
The jobs created will have wider benefits to the local community so job roles could be in a range of sectors including care, construction, maintenance, sports development and coaching, the emerging environmental economy, charity retail, schools and college settings, administrating and developing volunteering programmes and working within the many community venues or social enterprises in the city.
